Biblioteca Femminile Italiana

The main purpose of the Centre is the recovery of historical memory. Examples of past events reveal that undemocratic governance might become a painful experience. Often the victims of damnatio memoriae have been women artists, culturally opposed at various levels and scientifically cancelled and forgotten by the official culture.

For this reason, the Centre co-sponsors two projects in particular:

1) «Creadoras olvidadas: las Sinsombrero y Suiza». The project seeks to recover the memory of those Spanish women writers, artists, activists and philosophers of the generation of 1927 known as Las Sinsombrero (Women Without Hats) during their exile in Switzerland.

2) Biblioteca Femminile Italiana. The primary objective of the project is to systematically publish, by 2020, in digital format, a significant part of the corpus of early Italian female poetry (from the late Middle Ages to the early Renaissance).

The particular social and legal status of women in Italy from the Middle Ages to the early Renaissance (where female poetic activity is indirectly documented by the proscriptions to which it was subject by the ecclesiastical authorities), makes it necessary to pay attention to every form of poetic expression by women.
